Mercedes-Benz cuts weight in new SL 63 AMG droptop

Less weight and more horsepower will make the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG one of the top performing luxury droptops on the market.

By Mercedes-Benz, Wieck

Mercedes revealed the look of the new car today, a prelude to its formal unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show.

The new SL 63 will be 275 pounds lighter due to greater use of aluminum. It will now clock in at 4,059 pounds. And the AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged "biturbo" V-8 engine will deliver 530 horsepower. If that's not enough -- can you really ever have enough? -- there's an optional AMG Performance Package that boosts horsepower to 557. The direct-injected engine has an all-aluminum block, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with variable valve timing, air/water intercooling, alternator management and an "Eco" stop/start system. The exhaust system is tuned to make it sound cool.

The result is a sports convertible that can bolt from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds. The lighter weight of the car also helps conserve fuel. Top speed is limited to 186 mph. Yet new model will get 30% better gas mileage than the one it replaces. (At the Chicago Auto Show, Ford unveiled its Shelby GT convertible, electronically limited to 155 mph, but expected to be a whole lot cheaper than the AMG.)

Enhancing the performance is active suspension, speed-sensitive sports steering, high-performance brakes and a seven-speed transmission. Reassuringly, Mercedes says it will be the safest roadster out there.

Welcome to Mercedes-Benz of Fairfield.

Alyce, customers like you are why we're in the business. Thank you for this awesome review.

"The Mercedes Benz dealership of Fairfield Ca was the best car buying experience I've ever had! From the moment I walked in, everyone I encountered was warm, welcoming, and super friendly. David Long, the General Manager, and his staff, went above and beyond to ensure a pleasant car buying experience. I will definitely recommend anyone who has ever been frustrated, coerced, or pressured while buying a new car to take their business here and enjoy a more respectable and personal car buying experience.

I drove past Mercedes Benz of Fairfield many times during its construction, awaiting its completion.  In December I brought my ML350 In for a routine service.  I parked and walked toward the service center. An employee with a warm smile welcomed me, opened the door for me and directed me toward Asst. service manager Rafael Orellana. I was expecting to set up an appointment for a future date, but Rafael was able to get my car into service immediately! He offered to arrange a ride home for me in the mean time, but I opted to wait in the customer waiting area. It was quite lovely, plenty of high-end furnishings, a large flat screen television, and an incredible fireplace. Also, a deli area with treats and refreshments were made available complimentary to all customers.

While I was sitting next to the fireplace, David Long introduced himself and asked if I would like anything to drink from the deli. He got me water and then asked if there was anything else he could do. I joked that I wanted to trade in my ML350 and get a smaller car that would better suit a commuter, such as me. Without hesitation he went into his office and printed me a very generous quote for my ML350. He said the offer was good whether I bought a car from him, or not.  David then brought his laptop to me and showed me some vehicles he thought would be perfect for me. I immediately saw the car I needed and he arranged it to be available for a test drive. I loved it!

Yvonne Sturton, Finance Director, handled my financing. She was very personable and walked me through the unintimidating process. Every car Mercedes Benz of Fairfield sells is priced lower than market price. I didn't have to haggle, because the price was already fair. She also explained that if, for any reason I wasn't satisfied within two days and/or 250 miles, I was free to return the car, no questions asked. I loved the car already, but was relieved that I still had that option.

Before the ink had dried, my beautiful new car was waiting for me in the presentation room. It was such a lovely touch! Just one of the many little touches that sets Mercedes Benz of Fairfield far above the rest!

Since then, I have returned to Mercedes Benz of Fairfield a few times for regular service. Brian Simas, Asst Service Manager, always address me by name and has always made me feel like my car is the most important in the shop. One of my favorite thing about this dealership, in particular is that I am always welcome to stop by any time I like and get a free car wash. I have definitely taken advantage of that treat a few times!

Although I don't see myself purchasing another car in the new future, I continue to enjoy the benefits of being a Mercedes Benz of Fairfield customer. I would highly recommend anyone who is in the market for a new vehicle to stop on by, I'm sure David Long and his team will take fantastic care of you too!" - Alyce H.

Monday Maintenance Tip: keep your engine in tune.

Car-tune-up-lg
Fixing a car that is out of tune or has failed an emissions test can boost gas mileage by about 4 percent so don't skip your car's regular tune-ups. A misfiring spark plug can reduce a car's fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent so you'll also want to watch out for worn spark plugs. If your engine is in need of a tune-up, schedule a service appointment with us online today by clicking here: http://bit.ly/wV3zz6
