Mercedes-Benz Leads Commercial Van Segment with New Sprinter Van

Mercedes-Benz unveiled new Sprinter van that is now safer, greener and more economical that ever before

There is no question that the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van has proven to be a success, offering a tall Euro-style van in the already overcrowded and bland commercial van segment. Originally arriving in 2003 under the Dodge brand (when Daimler owned Chrysler) and now under Mercedes-Benz since 2010, the Sprinter was a pioneer in the segment worldwide.

Today, however, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has several competitors all wanting a piece of the Euro-style van market, specifically in the U.S.. This morning, with the launch of their new Sprinter – the first overhaul of the Sprinter since 2006 – Mercedes-Benz is proving that they’re still, and will remain, the leader in the field.

The new Sprinter continues to set the benchmark in safety, eco-friendliness, and style. The new Sprinter, available for order in June, boasts five new safety systems, engines that meet the future Euro VI emissions standard, a four-cylinder diesel engine for the U.S., and a far more rugged appearance. More importantly to buyers, however, is the decreased fuel consumption. The new Sprinter model will offer decreased fuel consumption over the current Sprinter, which at present averages around 25 miles to the gallon.

Customers can order the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter beginning in June 2013; deliveries will begin in September.

World premiere of new safety systems
The Sprinter has always been a pioneer with regard to driver assistance systems. Five new assistance systems — including several van firsts — will help reduce the number of accidents even further in the new Sprinter.

The following systems are celebrating their world debut in the Sprinter: Crosswind Assist, which is fitted as standard, and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and Blind Spot Assist, which are both optional. Other new features are Highbeam Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. The developers at Mercedes-Benz are convinced that these electronic assistants will play a key role in helping to reduce accidents in the van sector.

As one of the functions of the Electronic Stability Program, Crosswind Assist will be part of the vehicle’s range of standard equipment. Customers will be able to order the other assistance systems as individual options or as components of logically assembled packages. This allows every customer to tailor the Sprinter to its specific area of application.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz has improved the Sprinter’s handling even further. The lowering of the chassis has improved the van’s drag and fuel consumption and makes it easier to load and unload cargo.

World’s first van to meet the future Euro VI emissions standard
The new Sprinter is the world’s first van to meet the future Euro VI emissions standard in all of its engine variants. Euro VI drastically reduces the emission limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx), total hydrocarbons (THC), and particulate mass. The Sprinter achieves the strict limits with the help of its BlueTEC engine and SCR technology that injects AdBlue into the exhaust gas. The technology has already proven its worth in more than 100,000 commercial vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.
The performance of the diesel engines has remained unchanged, encompassing four- and six-cylinder units with outputs ranging from 70 kW (95 hp) to 140 kW (190 hp).

The developers have used the additional exhaust treatment stage to optimize the injection and combustion processes as well as the boost pressure. The results are lower fuel consumption and less combustion noise. The engineers also adjusted the drive system and the ancillary components to enhance fuel efficiency. This applies to the transmission and the rear axle as well as an intelligent generator management system.

As an alternative to the diesel engines, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is also available with a Euro VI compliant supercharged four-cylinder gasoline engine featuring direct injection. The engine generates 115 kW (156 hp) from a total displacement of 1.8 liters. The engine is also available in a natural gas variant with the same performance.

Power is transmitted either by the ECO-Gear six-speed manual transmission or the 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission with lock-up clutch, which is the only system of its kind to be found in a van.

Most economical van in its class
The combination of the highly efficient diesel engines, the optimized powertrain, the longer axle ratio, the ancillary components, and the BlueEFFICIENCY PLUS efficiency package has reduced fuel consumption to a minimum of 6.3 l/100 km (NEDC combined), which is a record value for the Sprinter segment. However, the new Sprinter is extremely economical not only as a result of its high fuel efficiency, but also because it comes with the ASSYST maintenance calculation system as standard in Europe. Thanks to this system, the van’s maintenance intervals, which were already long, have been extended to up to 60,000 km.

Enhanced exterior and interior
The new Sprinter’s appearance has also been substantially enhanced and made more striking. In line with Mercedes-Benz’ current design, the van’s radiator grille is now more vertical and confident. The grille’s three slats are perforated and wedge-shaped. Not only does this change create a more dynamic impression, it also increases the airflow. In addition, a frame surrounds the brand’s distinctive radiator grille, making it more prominent.

Another change involves the headlights, which are now more angular. The covers on the reflector housings are particularly striking, dividing the headlights into separate segments. The new hood is higher and the more distinctly shaped bumpers have finely worked lower edges similar to those found on SUVs. The new Sprinter is immediately recognizable from the rear, due to its double-segmented taillights.

The widely acknowledged exemplary interior has also been further enhanced. Comfort has been boosted by the new upholstery and seat coverings, the thicker steering wheel makes gripping easier, and the fresh air nozzles boast chrome applications if the customer opts for a multifunctional steering wheel. The knob of the gearshift lever has been redesigned as well.

The Sprinter is also fitted with a new-generation radio system that equips the van not only with state-of-the-art electronic entertainment features and Bluetooth telephone equipment (including a telephone keypad and phonebook), but also the Becker MAP PILOT navigation system.

Millions of kilometers of testing; orders can be placed beginning in June
The developers of the new Sprinter made sure that the van was thoroughly tested. More than eight million kilometers of endurance testing and extensive customer trials in everyday use had fully demonstrated the new Sprinter’s high quality by the time series production was launched.

Next Generation C-Class Sedan Confirmed for 2014 Detroit Auto Show

It’s confirmed that the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January

2015 C-Class Cabriolet

It has been confirmed that the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan, U.S. built, will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January before going on sale in August 2014.

In 2015, the updated C-class sedan will be followed up by a redesigned coupe, the C-Class convertible is also scheduled to go on sale in 2015. The sedan, coupe and cabriolet will then be followed by diesel and hybrid models as well as an all-wheel drive option. Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon did not confirm when the diesel and hybrid models will arrive, but a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz said the hybrid will be debuting in 2015 as well.

Cannon confirmed to Automotive News that, because of low anticipated demand, the redesigned C-class station wagon will not be sold in the United States.

Also commented on by Cannon was that the redesigned C-class exterior will be changed significantly, based on the spy photos, it will have far crisper and sharper lines.

As for Mercedes-Benz adding crossover variants to the C-Class lineup, it’s not likely. Cannon stated that vehicles like the BMW 3-series GT is “an answer to product question that no one is asking for.”
The Tuscaloosa, Ala. Mercedes-Benz plant is currently being expanded in order to make room for production of the C-Class sedan for North America starting next year with a output of around 100,000 units annually.

Mercedes-Benz has been a long time supporter of the game of golf, whether it’s supporting an elite group of pro golfers or raising money for charity through their Mercedes-Benz Dealer Golf Championship, Mercedes has played a large role in the game of golf. In fact, this week marks a 20-year milestone for the Mercedes-Benz brand’s involvement in the sport of golf.

In order to mark the occasion, Mercedes-Benz will honor its global golf Ambassador, Bernhard Langer, who also reaches a 20-year anniversary for his win at the 57th Masters in 1993, which put him in an elite group of professional golfers who have worn the coveted green jacket more than once. Mercedes-Benz is recognizing Langer during a ceremony at River Island to celebrate the occasion and his successful list of accomplishments both on and off the course.

“Mercedes-Benz and our dealers have proudly supported the game of golf for the past two decades. Golf embodies skill, precision and drive which are themes shared by Mercedes-Benz and our owners,” said Stephen Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. “Our global brand ambassador, Bernhard Langer embodies these characteristics and it’s fitting that we are celebrating both milestones together.”

Mercedes-Benz continues to be a leading supporter of golf around the world. The Mercedes-Benz brand is Official Patron and Vehicle of The PGA of America. As the official Patron, Mercedes-Benz is a supporter of the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid and the 2012 Ryder Cup. From 1994-2009, Mercedes-Benz was the title sponsor of the Mercedes Championship in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Within the U.S., the three-pointed star is currently involved in several high-profile golf tournaments, including the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Wells Fargo Championship, AT&T National, Northern Trust Open, AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and World Challenge presented by Northwestern Mutual.

“The PGA of America is extremely proud of our partnership with Mercedes-Benz and we salute them for their commitment to the game over the last 20 years,” said Pete Bevacqua, CEO, PGA of America. “The Mercedes-Benz brand and its dealers have supported and promoted golf on a variety of levels, all the while raising money for charities and giving back to communities.”

Since 1993, Mercedes-Benz dealers have hosted tournaments in their local communities for golf enthusiasts and customers as part of the Mercedes-Benz Dealer Golf Championship. The entry fees are donated to charities as part of the tournament activities. In 2012, the Mercedes-Benz Dealer Championship program consisted of 84 tournaments played by over 5,850 participants that raised $2.15 million for charity. The regional sectionals were played at Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu, Hawaii in November.

2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive

Powerful and lively drive system
The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive is based on the conventionally powered B-Class, which has become a bestseller in many countries since its market debut in 2011. As a particularly versatile vehicle concept, the B-Class also allows environmentally friendly driving at the Mercedes level – with its innovative electric drive. In the USA, the vehicle will only be introduced with battery electric drive.

Quiet and locally emission-free drive power is provided by an electric motor with more than 134 hp (100 kW). Typically for an electric drive, the maximum torque of 228 lb.-ft. is available right from the first tap on the accelerator pedal – this roughly corresponds to the torque delivery of a modern gasoline engine with a displacement of 3.0 liters. This results in decidedly powerful acceleration from a standing start. For the standard sprint from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h), the electric-powered B-Class requires less than ten seconds. This guarantees superior driving performance and highly dynamic, exhilarating driving pleasure in any situation.

The powerful lithium-ion battery is accommodated in the “Energy Space” in the vehicle’s underfloor – both space-saving and safe. Thanks to this intelligent packaging, the five-seater retains the familiar, generous interior and luggage space of the B-Class.

Emission-free even over longer distances
The maximum speed is electronically limited to 100 mph (160 km/h) – in the interests of operating range. The range is around 115 miles (200 kilometers), according to the respective driving cycle. This means that in addition to emission-free urban driving and short-range trips, longer journeys can also be undertaken without any problems, such as the distances covered on a daily basis by commuters. The battery of the B-Class Electric Drive can be recharged at any standard domestic power outlet. In the USA, the charging time for a range of about 60 miles (100 kilometers) is less than 2 hours at 240 V/40 A.

While the car is on the move, the electric drive itself contributes to a favorable energy balance by converting kinetic energy into electric current on the overrun and during braking, and feeds this energy into the battery (recuperation).

Dynamic Mercedes-Benz design
Refined sportiness together with visual appeal – the new B-Class Electric Drive is another example of the self-assured and dynamic Mercedes design, with powerful, tense lines and finely styled details. The front and rear sets the tone for the vehicle’s width, with a wide, prominent front grille, headlamps extending into the vehicle sides, a wide rear window, two-piece tail lamps and a large tailgate with a low loading sill. The side sill panels and striking bumpers with bar-shaped LED daytime running lamps exude dynamic. The charging socket is inconspicuously installed behind the charging flap.

Sporty interior with premium details
The interior underscores the high comfort standards of Mercedes-Benz. Highquality materials and finely structured surfaces, premium details, and precise finishing, emphasize the fact that electric driving is defined at a very high level according to the philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. The three large, round air vents in the center with their distinctively designed cross-form nozzles are sporty features that contribute to the emotional design language of the interior. Above the air vents is the display screen for the telematics system which appears to be free-floating – a modern, eye-catching feature of the cockpit.

When it comes to information and communication systems, the B-Class Electric Drive offers convenience and outstanding functionality that is signature luxury typical of Mercedes-Benz. Standard onboard features include the Audio 20 with a 14.7 cm color screen, a twin tuner, an MP3-capable CD player and a USB connection. Navigation is provided by the Becker® MAP PILOT. The multimedia system COMAND Online with internet access, navigation and voice control is available as an optional extra.

Functions specific to electric vehicles have been added to the instrumentation of the B-Class Electric Drive. A power display in the dial instrument has been added on the right. Its pointer rises in a clockwise direction from the green to the red area when power is being consumed, and drops below the zero line when the vehicle is feeding recuperative energy back into the battery.

Full connectivity
Its modern technology ensures that the B-Class Electric Drive is not only sustainable (locally emission-free) and agile (because of its high torque and acceleration), but also fully networked. Remote check-up and remote configuration of the vehicle is conveniently possible via the Vehicle Homepage. The driver can easily access his vehicle through the internet, using a PC or smartphone. In this way, it is possible to check the current charge status of the lithium-ion battery or to verify the vehicle’s current range on a map. The planned route can also be displayed, immediately showing whether and where the vehicle can be recharged along the way. The range of services for connectivity is rounded off with a pre-entry climate control option offering individually timed pre-heating or cooling. This advance air conditioning makes the B-Class Electric Drive the unrivalled benchmark in its segment.

Big on safety
Mercedes-Benz applies its familiar, high safety standards to the B-Class Electric Drive. Thanks to the innovative “Energy Space”, the battery is safely accommodated under the floor for crash protection. In addition, Mercedes-Benz already equips this innovative electric car with the radar-based accident warning system COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist as standard. This assistance system gives the driver a visual and acoustic warning of recognized obstacles, prepares him for braking action and assists him with the braking process as the situation requires. In this way it significantly reduces the danger of a rear-end collision. Additionally, more modern driver assistance systems are available – among them Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Active Park Assist.

Electric driving made by Mercedes-Benz
Locally emission-free electric vehicles such as the new B-Class Electric Drive are a major part of the Mercedes-Benz strategy for sustainable mobility. The Stuttgart-based premium manufacturer is reasserting its claim to leadership in this sector with electric cars which are fully suitable for everyday use. These include the B-Class F-CELL, and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive (TBD for USA). The smart fortwo electric drive which launched last year in Europe received a positive response from customers. Since the middle of last year, much more than 1,000 vehicles have been produced and delivered. The all-new smart fortwo electric drive will be available in U.S. stores beginning May 1, 2013. The new B-Class Electric Drive will be available in the USA from early 2014 and then the European launch will follow.
