Living Legends at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Here’s a special look at some of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles showcased at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance—models driven by royalty and racing legends alike.

There are more similarities between these two than just the obvious. For one thing, both are essentially road-going versions of winning racecars.

The 1910 Benz 21/80 Prinz Heinrich. Four seats, 80 hp, leaf springs and as long as a modern GL, this ran in a precursor race to what would become the German Grand Prix.

The start-up procedure for the 1910 Benz 21/80 Prinz Heinrich. Just remove the engine cover, prime the engine with hectane fuel and, while somebody else adjusts the steering wheel controls and foot pedals, stand in front of the car and use the hand crank to get the engine started. After three or four attempts at firing the engine, replace the engine cover and enjoy. Easy!

The iconic and legendary 300 SL on Rudge wheels. But here’s the thing about Rudges: they’re more than wheels. They are, in fact, an entire setup consisting of front and rear hubs, brake drums and axles. And by the way, that’s the iconic and legendary Sir Stirling Moss behind the wheel.

A 300 SL Roadster with single-unit Euro headlights. By 1961, the 300 SL's straight-six had come a long way since being plucked out of the Adenauer limousine and hot rodded in 1952. Gone were the Solex carburetors, replaced by Bosch mechanical direct injection, boosting horsepower a full 100 to 215.

The S-Class was one of the stars of this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and to celebrate, we surrounded the all-new 2014 S550 and S63 AMG 4MATIC with its predecessors, including the 300 SEL 6.3, arguably the spiritual ancestor of all AMGs. After his first turn behind the wheel, legendary drag racer Don Garlits summed up the 6.3 as anyone would the S63: “This car is just plain fast!”

Like the plate says, a 1960 300d—but the "d" doesn't stand for diesel. What it means is that it's the fourth iteration of the 300 Adenauer, the 300d having of course been preceded by the 300c. And in a nice bit of turnaround, the 300d used a version of the 300 SL's 3.0-liter straight-six, which itself started as a hot rodded version of the engine found in the original Adenauer.

The W116 450 SEL not only ushered in a new, sleek look for the Sonderklasse, but when equipped with the 6.9-liter M100 V-8, it became a legendary performance machine. Even if you've never driven one, you know what the 6.9 (as car enthusiasts the world over call it) is capable of if you've ever seen John Frankenheimer's film "Ronin" or David Lynch's "Lost Highway."

Mercedes-Benz showed off it’s brand new compact premium-class SUV concept at the “Auto Shanghai” motor show in April and now we are seeing more and more spy photos of the Mercedes GLA in production form emerge as it’s September debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show draws near.

The most recent spy photos and video show Mercedes’ answer to the BMW X1, testing under the sun on the streets of Dubai. The last time we saw the compact crossover, it was sporting taxi gear and winding it’s way around the Nürburgring.

Beneath the not so flattering black camouflage, it looks as though the GLA may have lost some of the sleeker, sporty compact crossover styling and lines that we originally saw from the concept and so hoped we would see in production – we will likely see the lines of the GLA concept come back on the AMG model.

The GLA’s engine range will be similar to that of the A-Class which means we will see several 4-cylinder units with outputs of up to 211 HP (155 kW) with an AMG model that will likely be powered by a direct-injected 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine that will produce around 354 HP (260 kW).

Mercedes-Benz SL Shooting Brake Concept

Mercedes-Benz SL Shooting Brake concept dubbed the 2013 Coupetorino unveiled at Mercedes Design Center

Italian design house Studiotorino along with six students have unveiled their vision for a shooting brake variant of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class dubbed the Coupetorino 2013. The Coupetorino 2013 is the successor to the Coupetorino 2008, a similar project that was developed in the same way with Istituto di Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) and Mercedes-Benz Design Center.
The Coupetorino 2013 is a non-profit academic project at  IAAD, it began in September 2012 with six students (Bruno Arena, Michele Bavaro, Riccardo Luigi Cascone, Stefano Manini, Dario Pellegrino and Cristiano Zanot) and one objective, transform the new iconic Mercedes SL into an exclusive Coupe.



The project SL was envisioned as a one-off special edition or limited series model, the Coupetorino was a realistic work-study project for the students, who also had to integrate engineering feasibility and cost of production in their work. Mercedes’ Head of Advanced Design Steffen Koehl gave three lectures to the students and made himself available to the students for questions throughout the project via email.



The Coupetorino 2013 1/4 scale model was presented on May 27 at the Mercedes-Benz Design Center in Como, Italy and given excellent reviews. Whether or not it makes sense for Mercedes-Benz, a shooting brake version of the iconic SL, only time will tell.

The Mercedes SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive circled the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a record time of 7:56.234 minutes


The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive circled the Nürburgring Nordschleife (“north loop”) in a record time of 7:56.234 minutes. Therefore, the electric AMG super sports car is at the same time the first electrically-powered series production vehicle, which masters the legendary race track in under eight minutes. The record time of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive was notarially certified. Two weeks after the first overall win for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in the 24 Hours Nürburgring, a further member of the SLS AMG family impressively demonstrates its potential on the most difficult race track worldwide.

Mercedes-AMG impressively shows the potential of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with the new record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Mercedes-AMG is the first vehicle manufacturer which makes it possible to circle the Nordschleife in under eight minutes with an electrically-powered series production vehicle. The SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive, with which Mercedes-AMG set up the record on the 20.832 kilometres long traditional race track in the Eifel, corresponds to the series version, which celebrates its launch in June 2013. The currently strongest AMG high-performance car has four electrical motors with a total output of 552 kW (751 hp) and maximum torque of 1000 Nm (738 lb-ft).
The gullwing car is therefore advancing to become the strongest and fastest electrically-powered series production vehicle in the world. The SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 3.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).
A new dimension of driving performance – the AMG brand pledge is fulfilled to remarkable effect by the outstanding performance dynamics, which come courtesy of AMG Torque Dynamics and are made possible by the wheelselective all-wheel drive. The most “electrifying” gullwing model ever has been developed in-house by Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The extremely powerful highvoltage battery for the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is the result of the collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth in the UK and is setting the pace in energy density, power density and efficiency. Here, the British Formula 1 experts were able to draw on their extensive experience with KERS hybrid concepts.



The car’s agile response to movements of the accelerator pedal and the linear power output are a source of pure delight: unlike with a combustion engine, the build-up of torque is instantaneous with electric motors – maximum torque is effectively available from standstill. The spontaneous torque build-up and immense power delivery without any interruption in traction on the one hand are combined with completely vibration-free motor running characteristics on the other.

Four motors, four wheels – the intelligent and permanent all-wheel drive of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive guarantees driving dynamics of the highest calibre, while at the same time providing the best possible active safety. Optimum traction of the four driven wheels is therefore ensured, whatever the weather conditions. According to the developers, the term “AMG Torque Dynamics” refers to individual control of the electric motors, something which enables completely new levels of freedom to be achieved. The AMG Torque Dynamics feature is permanently active and allows for selective distribution of power to each individual wheel. The intelligent distribution of drive torque has a beneficial effect on driving dynamics, handling, driving safety and ride comfort. Each individual wheel can be both electrically driven and electrically braked in accordance with the specific driving situation, thus helping to

• optimise the vehicle’s cornering properties,
• reduce the tendency to oversteer/understeer,
• increase the yaw damping of the basic vehicle,
• reduce the steering effort and steering angle required,
• increase traction,
• and minimise ESP® and ASR intervention.

Manufaktur hand finishing at company headquarters in Affalterbach

Mercedes-AMG has installed a dedicated Manufaktur hand-finishing section for electric vehicles at its headquarters in Affalterbach for final assembly of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive. The electrically powered gullwing model is assembled and readied for operation at a total of seven different stations. The entire logistics process is based in Affalterbach, too.
Production of parts such as the exterior and interior initially takes place at the Mercedes-Benz production facility in Sindelfingen. In Affalterbach, highly trained workers take charge of assembling the axles, electric motors, transmissions and cooling system components. Particular care is taken with the installation of all high-voltage components, such as the liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, the accompanying cables, inverter and control units, and the onboard charger. Needless to say, the utmost standards of safety are applied during all work on high-voltage components. The operational check and extensive final inspection at the end ensure that the manufacturing and product quality offered by the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive is of the very highest order.
